Lady And The Tramp Drawing

Disney has just released a sneak peek of the furry cast for the upcoming live-action remake of the 1955 animated classic Lady and the Tramp, based on the book Happy Dan, The Cynical Dog by Ward Greene.

The film is the newest in a long line of Disney re-imaginings of classic childhood favorites. After the box office success of Maleficent, Beauty and the Beast, and Alice in Wonderland, Disney got on a roll, producing live-action remake after live-action remake. An official trailer for the feature film hasn't been released yet, but here's what we know about the live-action Lady and the Tramp remake so far.

'Lady and the Tramp' will feature real animals

Lady and the Tramp is a retelling of the classic 1955 animated story where a classy sheltered cocker spaniel, named Lady, falls in love with a footloose streetwise mutt named Tramp.

Unlike Disney's live-action remake of The Lion King, Lady and the Tramp will feature a predominantly four-legged, furry cast without CGI. So, the remake will really be live-action with the use of actual animal actors. Think Homeward Bound: The Incredible Journey.

In April, Disney released images of Rose and Monte, the two leading dogs who will be playing as Lady and Tramp, respectively. Monte was rescued from a kill-shelter in New Mexico.

The lead characters will be voiced by Tessa Thompson, from Thor: Ragnarok, and Justin Theroux, from The Leftovers. On Aug. 8, Disney published images of the entire canine cast on Twitter, specifically Trusty, Jock, Peg, and Bull. This announcement accompanied news of the addition of voice actors Sam Elliot, Ashley Jensen, Janelle MonĂ¡e, and Benedict Wong.

Based on these announcements, it appears as though the only change to the classic story is that Jock will be gender-swapped and played by Jensen.

The movie will be released on new streaming service Disney+

Lady and the Tramp will be the first live-action remake to be released on Disney's new streaming service Disney+. The service is set to launch in early November with 300 movies and 7,000 television episodes.

The streaming service will feature the studio's collection of animated and live-action classics, while also including new original content, such new shows from the Marvel and Star Wars franchises. There will also be episodes of National Geographic as well as a number of Pixar movies. After Disney's recent acquisition of Fox, the studio announced a reboot of four major Fox franchises: Night at the Museum, Diary of a Wimpy Kid, Cheaper by the Dozen, and Home Alone.

Live-action generating a bad reaction

Unfortunately, Lady and the Tramp is being released at a difficult point for Disney's line of live-action remakes. Fans are beginning to dismiss Disney's adaptations as ripoffs of the original animated classics. With consideration to the poor reception of Disney's The Lion King and Dumbo, many wonder if Lady and the Tramp will be received with the same criticism or if it will win favors by featuring an actual animal cast.

Disney+ will launch on Nov. 12 with Lady and the Tramp being one of the first feature films to be released on the streaming service.
